We are the Hungarian community and friends. We are people who were born in Hungary, descended from Hungarians, or just interested in Hungarian culture.

Mi vagyunk a Christchurch-i magyar közösség. Néhányan Magyarországon születettünk, magyar származásúak vagyunk, vagy kötődünk a magyar kultúrához.
What do we do?
We gather to talk (in English and Hungarian), to eat, to celebrate, to remember, to watch Hungarian films, to learn Hungarian language, to dance, and to share our culture. Here are some highlights from 2013-2018.

We will be showing this film at the club house after lunch. Although the lunch requires booking and payment, the film is free admission.

Tárogató concert in Christchurch
We have a very special guest coming to Christchurch. Dr József Terék, one of the world's leading tárogató players, will perform for us on 11 of November. As far as we know, the tárogató has never been played live in New Zealand before, and this is a one-time-only occasion: Christchurch is his only performance in the South Island.
The tárogató is a Hungarian woodwind instrument, recognised as a Hungarikum (a national treasure of Hungary), and a symbol of Hungarian freedom since Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II's War of Independence. Its warm, rich tone is often called the voice of the Hungarian soul.
The programme includes works by Kodály and Bartók, Rákóczi melodies, verbunkos, csárdás, folk songs and operetta, plus a few surprises from jazz and Latin music. Event details:

Tárogató-koncert Christchurchben
Különleges vendéget fogadunk Christchurchben. Dr. Terék József tárogatóművész, a hangszer egyik legismertebb nemzetközi képviselője, november 11-én egyetlen estére nálunk lép fel. Új-Zélandon tudomásunk szerint még soha nem szólalt meg élőben tárogató, és ez a koncert egyszeri alkalom: a művész csak ezen az egy estén Christchurchben..
A tárogató hungarikummá nyilvánított magyar fafúvós hangszer, amely II. Rákóczi Ferenc szabadságharca óta a magyar szabadság jelképe. Meleg, telt hangja miatt gyakran nevezik a magyar lélek hangjának.
A műsorban Kodály és Bartók művei, Rákóczi-dallamok, verbunkos, csárdás, népdalok és operett szerepelnek, sőt jazz és latin meglepetések is lesznek. Részletek:

Immersion Hungarian language courses in Debrecen, Hungary. Two and four week courses July/August. Language classes during the day (9-3:30 Mon-Fri) with cultural activities and trips in the evenings and weekends.
